Doctors are very weary to prescribe it but Xanax is a miracle drug for anxiety and panic attacks. The key is to take it as soon as you feel an attack coming on. Xanax is addictive and is frequently abused. Doctors are afraid to prescribe to people that may abuse it such as addicts. Since I’m a drug addict and an alcoholic, it was almost impossible to find a doctor to prescribe Xanax. I found a doctor (finally) and I DO NOT abuse it. Actually, I have my Mom hold onto my medication and I just ask when I need one. I take 2-1 mg. tablets a day plus one if I really need it like if I feel a panic attack coming on. They may try to prescribe Trazadone. It made me feel very groggy. Xanax makes me feel much more peaceful but not "high" and I can actually sleep. I’d try different doctors until you find one that will prescibe Xanax (generic name is Diazapem). One thing is DO NOT drink while taking it, it’s very dangerous. They may also prescibe something else but Xanax is by far, the most effective for most people. Therapy is also very important. See a psychologist that you feel comfortable with and also think about going to group therapy. Check with your local mental health center for different therapy groups. Good luck.
I’m on a low dose of Zoloft and it helps me out a lot. Everyone reacts differently to medicines, so you just need to visit a doctor and see what they say.
you need to understand that panic attack is a sign of anxiety disorder which can be variously co-morbid with depression, other anxiety disorders like Generalised Anxiety disorders, phobia, or Obsessive compulsive disorders. When it is so, it is treated with antidepressants like SSRIs – fluoxetine, paroxetine, sertraline. But when it is comorbid with bipolar you need to take special precautions like addition of a mood stabiliser like lithium or valproate which will prevent antidepressant induced manic switches. However ideal would be to take cognitive behavioral therapy along with medicines.
You must contact a local psychiatrist before taking above medicines.

I was on Zoloft and felt like a zombie…It made me gain weight (about 50 pounds), I had no energy and it was major hell trying to wean myself off of it. I had the worst side effects, that of a junkie on heroin. If I skipped a day of it I’d have flu like symptoms. Every person is different though. You may want to try therapy first and then decide if taking medicine is what would work best for you. I’ve been in therapy for my anxiety/depression/OCD for a few years and have found that to work better than taking medicine.
i have panic attacks with depression.
The first episode the doctor prescribe me prozac. I was told to write a diary of it. They wanted me to join a support group but I didnt. After about two weeks the panic was completely gone so I stop taking the medicine. Because I was on prozac, I was able to end a relationship because I had no feelings what so ever.lol.
in Aug 2007, I got another panic attack this was the worst one I ever had. The circumstance my job was messing with me. I had financial problems. Boyfriend ignoring me which cause major depression again. I went to the doc he gave me the genetic version of prozac. Fluoxetine when I took this my arms started shaking really bad on one said. No one else felt the shake but me. I called my doctor and told him the medicine is too strong for me. He told me to continue taking the medicine.
I had to write things like I am somebody. Not anybody I am Koko e.t.c. I am destine to do great things. I am a surviver.

The best therapy is yourself. The doc only know what you tell him. You know yourself better than anybody else.

If you believe in God. Start taking out that bible. Watch sermons on tv. Joel osteen is real good. Take notes. If you not religious. Take things day by day.
There are tons of medications to keep panic attacks under control. Long term and short term. Give "Panic Away" a try. A whole different approach without medication. I wrote a review about it..
