What do I do to keep from having panic attacks?
I have depression, but take medicine for it and I’m just fine, but recently I’ve been getting panic attacks, and I’ve never had them before. They come out of nowhere, and I think I’m dying even when I know what they are. What should I do to stop them, and what triggers them. My twin sister recently moved away to college, and my mom thinks that could be a trigger, but even when she is home visiting I get them. What should I do?

Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc.
Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI – Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level.
But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There’s this strange herb called "St John’s Wort" – it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John’s Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc.
The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced… you have that "learned behavior" in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior – Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction… There are several other techniques to help cope them!
Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to….

stress is only one of the reasons and that is y i get them sometimes just let ur doc know ok it will get better
You have to go to a psyciatrist (sp) doctor for this. He or she will be able to give you the appropriate medications for such a disorder. I have them too and took a medication specifically made for panic disorder. Don’t let your regular physician give you these medications. they don’t know enough about them. go to a specific doctor that specializes in mood disorders.
It is most likely the medication that is causing the panic attacks.
You should let your doctor know ASAP that you are getting them, so she can put you on a different medication, or possibly give you additional medication to control the panic attacks.
I’ve found that staying busy helps me feel better. The more downtime I have the more my body does not seem to know how to handle that.
Stay busy, eat well, and excercise as much as you can.
Good luck
Depression and anxiety seem to go hand in hand, their can be many things that trigger a panic attack, the main trigger is typically the fear of having another one, for some reason these attacks are stamped into ones memory, a person can be going about there typical day and boom a panic attack strikes without warning, or so you think their was no warning, but in reality their was. So the best advise I can give to you is to learn how to handle a attack when it comes about, you have the power to mentally make one go away, you can achieve this by understanding it wont kill you, by breathing out of your nose and by understanding it will pass, you can also go on line and read about natural ways to get yourself out of a panic attack, their are many ways of doing this, and I’m sure you will find the way that works best for you.
My mom, sister and I all suffer from panic attacks. All 3 of us are on Xanax. My mom and sister are also on Paxil.
