I have terrible anxiety and restlessness, what are the best meds to treat this?
i am calling tomorrow to make an appointment with a new doctor that has been recommended to me more than once. i struggle with anxiety attacks on a daily basis, and i have major trouble falling asleep, and staying asleep at night. i am just wondering if any of you have had similar issues, and i know when it comes to medications, you have to go through the trial and error process before you get it just right, but if any of you out there can suggest the best medications to help with my problems, i would greatly appreciate that so i can discuss medications with my doctor. i have tried xanax and ambien, xanax worked good. ambien got me to sleep quick but i would wake up periodically throughout the night and have to take another. i just tried trazadone for the first time so we’ll see how that works…. but i guess my main question is…. what would you recommend i ask my doctor to prescribe me for the anxiety and insomnia???? i need some good stuff that works, because these issues are starting to interfere with my daily activities and they are depressing the relationships i have with friends and family. i want to get better, not worse, and i damn sure dont want to end up in a hospital. any suggestions are appreciated.

Ask your doctor. I have the same problems as you. Don’t take unprescribed drugs. It’s not a very good idea. I’m thinking that you have Generalised Anxiety Disorder ’cause I had the exact same symptoms. Ask for a sedative as well as an anti-anxiety drugs.
I don’t know if you suffer from depression as well as anxiety, but as someone who does, I would strongly urge you to not take Ambien. Ambien made me so depressed the day after I took it I would never dare take it again. But this doesn’t sound like it’s an issue for you, but instead that it doesn’t keep you asleep. Regarding Xanax, you might want to consider the half-lives of the different benzodiazepines. Xanax has a half-life of 6-8 hours, so half of it clears your system in that time. Valium (diazepam), on the other hand, has a half-life of about 24-36 hours. This would be more effective in keeping you asleep than xanax. If you do want a doctor to prescribe you a benzodiazepine, you might not want to come right out with it because they might peg you as a "drug-seeker." In any case, you shouldn’t be on any sort of benzo for more than a few weeks. Have you tried antihystamines such as diphenhydramine HCL (Benadryl) or Doxylamine Succinate HCL (Unisom)? These are less damaging physiologically and are available over the counter.
If you are anxious on a daily basis, in the long term I would suggest some sort of antidepressant like Prozac (the oldest in the class of SSRI medications). Benzodiazepines such as xanax and valium are only meant for short term use – they will become less effective in the long term and become physically addictive. You should look for long term solutions.
