I have a senior dog with CDS, and he is exhibiting some OCD behaviors and anxiety attacks…?
He is under the care of a holistic and traditional vet, but the anxiety attacks occur at night and I need a way to help him calm down at night, so we can get some sleep! He is being treated with anipryl, and cholodin, supplements….and he is burning too many calories with the anxiety attacks. Does anyone have any advice on what else we can try. He is still happy and engaged 80 percent of the time. Its the nocturnal behavior that I need to address, he walks in tight circles until he falls to a sitting position, and we are having a hard time calming him. Please only serious answers….I don’t need any sarcasm. He is a rescue dog that we have loved for 4 years, and we want to make sure we are doing what is best for him.

Well with traditional medicine you could ask your vet for a sedative to give your dog at night. It would be like a sleeping pill to relax him. This isn’t really great for the dog’s body and probably wouldn’t help him to last too much longer depending on what his condition is right now, but it would help you to sleep and him to sleep for the next little while.
One of the possible side effects of anipryl is restlessness/anxiety. Since you said you see a holisitic vet, if your holistic vet practices homeopathy, I’d start considering that more seriously. You would have to take your dog off of anipryl so that the vet could see the real symptoms that your dog has, not the side effects of the drugs your dog is on. Then with these symptoms a specific remedy is chosen. It sometimes takes some trials and errors to find the right remedy, but if the right remedy is found it can really help a dog. Cholodin is a supplement to help with joint problems and arthritis, so I’d leave your dog on that and any other natural supplements you have your dog on to help him be more comfortable.
Good luck!
