Panic Attack and Anxiety Disorder
Symptoms of anxiety and panic attacks are not that rare and are one of the prices we pay living in the west. Like many other diseases as heart attacks, obesity, high cholesterol, it is related( among other reasons) to the life style we lead. Stress is an integral component in our life. Even if we do not always feel that we are stressed our body may indicate us that this is the situations.
Panic attack can happen to anyone and is resulted in many diverse and myriad reasons: it can be a one-time incident that will not occur again (Many people will experience one or two unprompted panic attack:s. i.e., a panic attack without a trigger or a preliminary signs) and it can happen very often making life miserable and unbearable. If you experience repeated panic attacks over an extended period of time, either spontaneously or in relations to another form of anxiety disorder, you might have panic disorder, which can be treated by a professional, your doctor or a psychologist.
Etiology (the reasons for panic attacks and anxiety disorder):
Anxiety attack can derive from stress or of much more complicated medical situation such as PSTD (post traumatic stress disorder) and traumatic experiences. It can be triggered by a specific situation such as being in a crowded place (social phobias), closed places (claustrophobia), open spaces (agoraphobia) and more. As in any disease (though panic anxiety attack is not a disease but a condition) , diagnosing the problem is half of the solution. It is important to understand that even if you have- lets say claustrophobia which is only triggered when you are in elevators- and it doesn’t have an overall effect on your life it can stem from deep rooted problems that you are not aware of. This relatively minor problem can become more complicated in time if it is not being treated. Many people suffer from phobias in one level or another.
My Own Specific Phobia:
I do not feel comfortable in elevators and if I will get stuck in an elevator my heart rate will probably increase. .This is not a sever situation. However, in the past I used to avoid elevators at all; thus I missed interviews that were hold in a building in a high floor since I couldn’t climb so many floors, I was afraid of locking the door in a public toilet room. Today, after treating the problem it doesn’t have big influence on my life, as I said I do not have much affection to elevators but I use them when necessary. And more important i do not avoid close place as a cinema or theatre.
Tendencies for Panic Attack:
There also situation that can increase the chances for a panic attack if you have the tendency for that: for example in an airplane. It doesn’t mean necessarily that each time you go on a plane that you will experience an attack or that you are afraid of flights but this situation can trigger in a certain point of time the tendency causing a panic attack.
Symptoms of Panic Attacks:
Every person is familiar with the feeling of anxiety. We might feel tense before an important test or a lecture, our heart might race fast before an interview, we feel worried for our loved ones. However, this mechanism is essential as it signals us that there is a problem; something irregular and unusual. Anxiety can help us stay alert and focused and motivate us to solve our problems.
However, suffering from anxiety attacks is a whole different story. People who suffer from anxiety attacks on a regular basis, life can become unbearable; they will do everything to avoid certain situations attempting to abstain from what triggers the attacks. Thus, may prevent themselves from leading and living the life they want.
As we mention previously panic attack can occur without any warning. You can start your day feeling healthy and cheerful and all of a sudden it attacks you: your heart rate is increasing, it is pounding like you’ve never experienced, you start to sweat, you become breathless, you cannot focus on what you see and in general you feel you have no control over the situation. This is a very frightening experience though it’s not dangerous. Many people who thought they are having heart attack actually experienced panic attack…
Symptoms of Anxiety Disorder:
Anxiety disorder relates to a ongoing stage where the person who suffers from it is engulfed with the feeling of anxiety and fears (not necessarily specific fears but more general feeling of uneasiness and tension)
Heart is beating faster: the problems with panic attacks is that because you are afraid they will happen again you start having the symptoms all the time. If a person experience a panic attack in the street s/he might be afraid going outside and just the thought of it can trigger the symptoms such as sweat and increased heart beats…
Other symptoms announcing the onset of a panic attack : heavy breathing, chest pain, numbness in the area of the chest and limbs, tensed muscles, stomach ach, cold hands.
However, panic attack and anxiety disorder are treatable and can be cured completely. They can even be a major turning point as they force you to search and explore the deep reasons that brought you to this condition.
